Brace yourselves: Christmas is coming

Surviving/enjoying/loving the Christmas season with a little help from babywearing.

We'll it's officially Advent, my deliveries from Amazon are almost up to daily, the kids are counting down the days and I've ordered my turkey. It's a crazy time of year and with a new baby in the mix... thank goodness for babywearing!

Chances are if it’s not on Amazon it’s not on the Christmas list, but there will inevitably be a trip or two to the actual shops this Christmas. Babywearing means you can navigate the crowds a whole lot easier. If you do want to take the buggy, wear the baby and use the buggy to carry all the shopping!

On that note, a new wrap or sling makes a lovely present idea. One for you, one for baby. An excellent excuse for a new pretty! Or wrap fabric scarf, or wrap design blanket/snood/bracelet/necklace/dribble bib for baby…my list goes on…

And while you’re out doing those last shopping bits, or you’re watching the big Christmas light switch on, you and baby can snuggle up together in a cosy wrap. A nice thick cushy cotton wrap or something with wool in it is lovely for winter babywearing.

Once you finished buying all the presents, you can babywear while wrapping them all…have you ever tried to wrap presents with a toddler “helping”??? Carnage.

Is anyone else hosting this year? The list of food prep goes on and on and on…Anna will be hanging out in the sling while I bake, prep veg, and wash up. In fact, I spend so long washing up that I think she remembers the motion from when she was in the womb and pretty much instantly calms when she’s in the sling while I’m washing up.

I love all the Christmas get-togethers, but anyone who knows me, or has read this blog before knows I get real anxiety over “passing the baby around”. Wrapping the baby is my solution to this. My babies, especially when they are little, get overwhelmed easily and don’t last long before they get too tired. Keeping Anna wrapped will avoid these worries.

My wardrobe is severely lacking these days. I’m not going to be dressing up this Christmas season.  Babywearing means I need to wear long tops, and thin tops so I can wrap successfully. Breastfeeding means I need to wear tops that leave my boobs accessible. And don’t get me started on the joy that is my post-natal body. (Side question: how long am I post-natal for?) I love babywearing for being a cover up! A pretty wrap and a big necklace detracts from the depressing collection that is my wardrobe!

Does anyone else view naptime as sacred? It can be stressful trying to navigate all the parties, events, and busy days while maintaining naptime schedule. I say, let is go this December, just let them nap in the sling!

Christmas dinner in our house is cooked by my husband. He is one heck of a chef and I bloomin love Christmas dinner. I fully intend on stuffing my face at lunch and then again and again with left overs. (turkey, stuffing, gammon, with a few salted tomatoes on fresh bread…lush) So, sling the baby, go for a walk and you’ll find that wearing the baby counts towards burning off more calories! Babywearing makes that post-Christmas lunch family walk a doddle.

We have two sling library sessions left before Christmas. Come along and we can help you find the right sling. (Tuesday 29
th November at Pickles in Witham and Friday 9th December at Trinity Methodist Church Hall in Chelmsford)
